If you have read Atomic Habits by James Clear, you surely already know that almost imperceptible changes in our daily lives can make substantial improvements in the long run. Today we are going to discuss something similar, but with our car. If you have a combustion vehicle, whether it is gasoline, diesel, or LPG, it is possible that you have never thought to check the fuel tank cap. However, this component may be ‘gifting’ your fuel to the atmosphere, making you lose money and also contributing to your vehicle’s environmental impact. Stick around and we will explain everything point by point.

Is the gas cap really that important?

The cap may have an anchoring system to the fuel door (so we don’t lose it), but it can crack and break over time

The fuel tank cap, which at first glance might seem insignificant, is actually a key part for the optimal functioning of our automobile. Although it may not seem like it, a gas cap in poor condition or missing can cause a reduction in fuel efficiency of between 1% and 2%. This is because the cap prevents gasoline vapors from escaping outside, allowing the engine to use them efficiently.

In addition, a missing or damaged gas cap can generate environmental problems, since fuel vapors are released directly into the air, contributing to air pollution.

How to detect problems with the gas tank cap

If you have lost the tank cap, it is easy to realize that you need to replace it. Many of them are generic, so you won’t have trouble finding a replacement. Once you have it, take a close look at the outer flap of your tank, as there is usually a small hook to place the cap while you refuel. This way you will avoid losing the cap again.

However, determining if the cap is loose or poorly adjusted can be a bit more complicated. To do this, you can perform a simple auditory test: while unscrewing the cap, pay attention to whether you hear a hiss. If so, it means the cap fits correctly and there are no problems. Otherwise, it is recommended that you replace it.

What else is the fuel tank cap used for?

In addition to preventing the loss of fuel vapors, the gas tank cap also prevents dirt and other contaminants from entering the tank. The presence of impurities in the gasoline can cause a decrease in fuel efficiency and damage your vehicle’s engine.

Therefore, it is essential that you pay attention to the condition of the gas tank cap and ensure that it is tightly fitted and in good condition. In this way, you will not only be protecting your wallet, but also contributing to the care of the environment.
