Believe it or not, there is a possibility of buying an affordable, reliable car at a decent price in the second-hand market. It is not easy to find a unit that meets these characteristics, but that is no reason to give up prematurely.
If you have a very tight budget, we invite you to stay with us. We are going to explain some very simple guidelines so that you can find a reliable car with which to make kilometers without exceeding 5,000 euros and with an age range between 10 and 15 years:
Better with a manual gearbox

Driving an automatic is extremely comfortable, but it is better to reserve this experience for when you can buy a more modern car. When we buy a used car, we run the risk of purchasing a vehicle that has not received good maintenance. In this case, automatic gearboxes require maintenance (their oil needs to be changed), but not many people know this.
Furthermore, in the event that an automatic gearbox fails, the breakdown will be extremely expensive to fix—let’s not even talk about dual-clutch gearboxes like the DSG. Therefore, if you are going to buy a car on a limited budget, go for a manual gearbox. They are more reliable, simpler, and less prone to breaking down.
Forget about aesthetics

Good-looking cars have a market. Smart buyers looking for functionality and reliability usually don’t turn their noses up at an estate car or a sedan. What matters to us is on the inside. Whether it’s pretty or ugly is relative.
If you go for an ugly car (or one with no market), you will have much more room for negotiation. If you don’t buy a hatchback or an SUV for 6,000 euros, someone else will come along and put down the money. But, if you are negotiating a Ford Mondeo for 4,500 euros and a door handle is broken, you can lower the price for the seller without fear. You might be the first person interested in that car in months. They are desperate to get it off their hands.
Look only for models with reliable mechanics

When venturing into buying an old second-hand car for less than 5,000 euros, mechanical reliability should be your main selection criteria. Not all vehicles age the same way; some models are renowned for their durability and low maintenance, even after years of use. Researching and focusing on these models can save you not only money on repairs, but also headaches.
Before making a decision, dedicate time to research. Car forums, owner reviews, and engine reliability guides are excellent resources to identify the models with the best mechanical history. Look for vehicles that have a reputation for standing the test of time and that are known for breaking down infrequently and with relatively affordable breakdowns to fix.
Buy only what you can afford

BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Ford Mustang, Volkswagen Phaeton… often, friends with tight budgets ask me if these vehicles are worth it. And obviously, they are great, but you have to keep in mind that maintaining those luxury cars is not affordable at all. If you have a small budget, you shouldn’t go for a high-end car. Whatever you end up saving, you will lose in maintenance.
In addition, if you have a small budget, the ideal is to go for a more mainstream car. That way, in the event of a breakdown, you can fix it with the money out of your own pocket.
Consider the maintenance history

A good maintenance history is just as crucial as the model’s reputation. A well-cared-for car, with detailed service records, is indicative of a vehicle that will likely maintain its reliability. Don’t get carried away just by the brand or model; verify that the specific car you are considering has been properly maintained. You can order the CARFAX report with a discount or even pull the famous detailed DGT report if the car you are going to buy is Spanish.
Do not underestimate the mechanical inspection

Finally, regardless of the model’s reputation, a professional mechanical inspection before purchase is essential. This can reveal hidden problems and give you a clear idea of the vehicle’s real condition. Even the most reliable model can have problems if it has not been properly maintained.
Focusing on mechanical reliability will ensure a smarter and more satisfying purchase, allowing you to enjoy your old car without unnecessary worries. Simply evaluate options, look at second-hand cars and, with a little patience, you will be able to find that unit that fits your tight budget as closely as possible.
