The vast majority of cars in today’s vehicle fleet use timing belts. This is the method the industry has standardized, mainly due to its low material costs. Approximately 70% of the cars we see and use in our daily lives use this timing method. In this post, we’ll explain and analyze the pros and cons of this system.
Advantages of the Timing Belt

Lower Price (for the consumer and the manufacturer)
The main reason manufacturers opt for belts instead of chains is cost. The manufacturing cost of a rubber belt is much lower than that of a metal chain. As a result, the manufacturer can generate higher profits compared to selling chain-driven engines.
It also makes the vehicle’s retail price more affordable. As a result, this provides the manufacturer with a strong incentive for after-sales service. Most customers with cars that have timing belts go to the brand’s official service centers to have them maintained. In short, a car manufacturer will save costs in the vehicle’s production. It will generate higher revenue at its authorized service centers in the future. And the customer will pay less for the car at the dealership.
Low Noise Level in the Cabin
The second advantage of timing belts is quiet operation and comfort. Generally, the friction of the rubber provides some damping. In engines with timing chains, since friction occurs between metal parts, the operation is rougher. This detail makes vehicles with belt-driven engines much quieter.
However, many cars with timing chains belong to the high-end segments. This means they have better build quality and, consequently, better sound insulation. That is why this second point only applies to the more affordable chain-driven vehicles on the market.
Disadvantages of Owning a Car with a Timing Belt

Regular and Mandatory Maintenance
The main disadvantage of owning a car with a timing belt is its maintenance. The belt must be replaced when specified by the manufacturer. However, you can get a head start and have it replaced 10,000 kilometers earlier. This is one of the tricks for extending your car’s lifespan.
How Much Does It Cost to Replace the Timing Belt?
Replacing the timing belt is an expensive procedure. The part itself—the belt—is inexpensive. The labor required for the replacement is not. That’s why the procedure is so expensive. On average in Spain, the average cost of a timing belt replacement is around €400. This procedure usually also includes replacing the water pump. Both the pump and the belt are typically sold as replacement kits.
Timing Belt and Water Pump
The water pump is replaced at the same time as the timing belt to avoid paying double for labor. Like the belt, the pump is a very inexpensive component, but it requires many hours of labor. As a preventive measure, it’s best to replace both components at the same time.
If you’re not familiar with the repair shop where you’ve taken your car, let the mechanic know that you want to have this dual maintenance performed. When it’s time for the timing belt service, specifically request that the coolant pump be replaced. The extra cost will be negligible, and you’ll be able to prevent future problems.
Risk of Breakage
Finally, the worst part of owning a vehicle with a timing belt is the risk of breakage. Most timing belts installed in vehicles are high quality. However, poor maintenance or a belt in poor condition can accelerate breakage. This would ultimately cause engine problems that are very expensive to repair.
Now you know the benefits and risks to keep in mind if the car you own or want to buy has a timing belt. You can also check out the differences compared to cars with chain-driven timing systems in this other post.
