About SMART FORTWO
The Smart Fortwo is an urban subcompact car or city car of Segment A by the German manufacturer Daimler / Mercedes-Benz Group. As its name indicates, this urban vehicle features a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and seating for two passengers.
The first generation of the Smart Fortwo was introduced at the 1998 Paris Motor Show and was redesigned in 2002. Before this redesign, the model was called the "Smart City Coupé". All engines equipped in this vehicle were 3-cylinder turbocharged inline engines.
The second generation of the Fortwo was introduced in November 2006. The model improved substantially in terms of safety. It became the lightest production car in Europe, a record it still holds. In 2007, the German brand introduced a microhybrid version of this vehicle (MHD), although it was never marketed in North America.
The third generation of the Smart Fortwo is divided into two stages. From 2014 to 2019, the W453 was marketed with combustion engines. However, in 2017, Smart introduced the electric variant (Smart EQ Fortwo), which is the model that has continued to be marketed after 2019. The development was done in conjunction with Renault, with this car sharing many elements with the Renault Twingo.
The Smart Fortwo is internationally recognized for its safety. The main characteristic of this model is that its chassis is manufactured from a single piece of steel, known as the Tridion safety cell. This allows it to withstand major impacts without deforming the passenger compartment, something that does not happen in most vehicles in its segment.
