About MG 5

The MG 5 is a C-segment compact car from the Chinese manufacturer SAIC Motor under the British brand MG. This model has been in production from 2012 to the present. It has had 2 generations to date.

The first generation was sold as a hatchback under the name MG5, while the sedan version was marketed as the MG GT. The predecessor models to the MG5 include the Rover 25 and the MG ZR.

The first generation of the MG5 debuted as a concept at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show as the MG Concept 5. This generation was characterized by offering a modern design and a selection of engines that included a 1.5-liter "VTi-Tech" four-cylinder gasoline engine, producing 107 hp. A "Hyperboost" turbo version was also introduced in 2013, offering 127 hp, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. This generation was built on the same platform as the Roewe 350, standing out for its versatility and economical performance.

The second generation of the MG5 was unveiled in September 2020, just before the 2020 Beijing Auto Show. This generation introduced the design language of the third generation of the MG family, with a front end similar to that of the MG HS. Engine options include a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine developed by SAIC, producing 171 hp, and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 118 hp. This model has reached the international market with different engine and transmission configurations, including CVT and DCT options.

The MG5 has been a pioneer in several markets as the first electric vehicle of its class in the UK with the MG5 EV version, standing out for its practicality and efficiency. In addition, the MG5 Scorpio variant introduced in 2022 offers a completely redesigned front end and a performance-inspired body kit, along with additional color options, demonstrating MG's commitment to innovation and sporty design.

The MG5 competes in a highly competitive segment with alternatives such as the Ford Focus or the Volkswagen Golf in its hatchback variant. The GT version competes against models such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, among many others.
