About Lancia Delta

The Lancia Delta is a C-segment hatchback produced by the Italian manufacturer Lancia. There have been 3 generations of the model since its launch in 1979, which replaced the Lancia Fulvia Berlina. It was also marketed as the Saab-Lancia 600 in Nordic countries for a brief period between 1980 and 1982.

The first generation of the Delta (1979-1994) was introduced at the 1979 Frankfurt Motor Show. It stood out for its avant-garde design by Giorgetto Giugiaro and for incorporating uncommon details in its segment such as independent suspension, power steering, a folding rear seat, or the rear window that reached down to the bumper. In competition, the Delta HF 4WD dominated the World Rally Championship in the late 80s and early 90s. It was manufactured on a platform derived from the Fiat Ritmo, with greater structural rigidity.

This original Lancia Delta was offered with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines. The gasoline engines ranged from a 75 hp 1.1 to a powerful 165 hp 2.0 turbo. The diesel was a 1.9 turbo. Available configurations included front-wheel or four-wheel drive, and 4- or 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmissions.

The second generation (1993-1999) was unveiled at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show. Its main novelties were a more aerodynamic body, ellipsoidal headlights, and new 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0-liter gasoline engines. There were also 1.9 turbodiesel versions.

Regarding the design, the more wraparound bumpers and a chrome side molding stand out. It was manufactured on the Type 838 platform, which would later be used on models like the Fiat Bravo/Brava.

The third and final generation of the Lancia Delta (2008-2014) was presented at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. It debuted a sportier image and featured 120 hp 1.6 Multijet diesel and 150 hp 1.4 Turbo Jet gasoline engines. In terms of equipment, this generation was the most complete, with stability control, traction control, or light and rain sensors. It was based on the FGA Small platform, shared with other models of the Fiat group.

The "Lancia Delta" brand will always be rooted in its great successes achieved during its first generation. The Lancia Delta HF Integrale achieved 6 consecutive titles in the World Rally Championship between 1987 and 1992, a historic milestone in the motoring world. Its four-wheel-drive variants and powerful turbo engines dominated the championship during those years.

Regarding its rivals, the most recent generations of the Delta have had to compete with other vehicles in its segment such as the Opel Astra, the Ford Focus, or the Volkswagen Golf.
