About AUDI 80
The Audi 80 is a D-segment luxury car manufactured by Audi (Volkswagen Group). The first Audi 80 appeared in 1972 as a replacement for the Audi F103. It was eventually replaced by the Audi A4 in 1996. The Audi 80 was a luxury sedan, although in some generations it was also sold with estate, coupé, and even convertible body styles. It had a total of 4 generations.
The Audi 80 B1 was the second product of Audi's modern era to be developed entirely under Volkswagen ownership. It marked a break with the Auto Union/DKW era. This first model was sold in the United States and Canada as the Audi Fox. In 1973, the model was awarded Car of the Year.
The second generation of this saloon was built on the B2 platform (Typ 81). The bodywork was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and there was no estate version (Variant), as that segment was covered by the Volkswagen Passat, which arrived a couple of years later. In the United States, the model was sold as the Audi 4000, while in Australia it was called the Audi 5+5. The model underwent a major redesign in 1984, demonstrating that the B2 platform was extremely versatile (from which the Audi Coupé and Audi Quattro were derived).
The third generation (Typ 89) arrived in Europe in 1987 on a platform completely independent of the Volkswagen Passat. This model was marketed solely as the Audi 80 and Audi 90 —a more luxurious version of the same model—. The 1988 Audi Coupé (Typ 8B) would also stem from this same development.
The fourth and final generation of the Audi 80 arrived in 1991 and lasted until 1996. It is truly considered a restyling of the B3 model. The five-cylinder engines stopped being called 'Audi 90'. From this point on, Audi entered into strong competition against BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the mid-size luxury saloon segment. For this very reason, the model ended up being replaced by the Audi A4, giving the brand a makeover.
