The BMW 4 Series is a high-end sports car (D-segment in Europe) manufactured by the German marque BMW. They are the Coupé, Convertible and Liftback body versions of the BMW 3 Series. The BMW 4 Series separated from the 3 Series in 2013.

The first generation of the BMW 4 Series was produced from 2014 to 2020 and included three versions: the Coupe (F32), the Convertible (F33) and the five-door Liftback (F36) marketed as the “Gran Coupe.” The F32 succeeded the E92/E93 coupe/convertible models in the fifth-generation 3 Series range and shared many features with the 3 Series F30. The F32/F33/F36 were powered by turbocharged three-cylinder (gasoline/petrol only), four-cylinder and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines.

In early 2014, BMW introduced the high-performance F82/F83 M4 models, powered by the S55 turbocharged inline six-cylinder inline six-cylinder engine. The F32/F33/F36 and F82/F83 M4 models were well received for their sleek design, powerful engines and advanced technological features. However, the F32 was criticized for its weight and driving dynamics, which some critics considered less attractive than those of the previous generation E92/E93 models.

The second generation of the BMW 4 Series includes the Coupe version (G22), the Convertible version (G23) and the Sedan version (G26) called “Gran Coupe“. The G22 was launched in 2020, succeeding the F32 model. The new 4 Series shares many features with the BMW 3 Series G20, including engine options, and features a significant design change to distinguish it from the 3 Series and elevate it upmarket. The most notable design change is the large kidney-shaped front grille.

Its rivals by segment and price are the Audi A5 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. There are two generations of this car to date.
