The BMW 1 Series is a high-end car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by the German marque BMW. It has been in production since 2004, when it was presented at the Paris Motor Show.

Throughout this time it has had several different body styles, the hatchback being always present. Its predecessor is the BMW 3 Series Compact. From the second generation onward, the BMW 1 Series Coupé and Convertible versions were renamed BMW 2 Series. This happened similarly with the BMW 3 Series, whose convertible and coupe version became part of a new model.

In addition to the hatchback versions, there is also a sedan model that is marketed exclusively in Mexico and China. This vehicle is produced in a collaboration between BMW and Brilliance Auto, called ‘BMW Brilliance’. Both hatchback and sedan models are built on the BMW UKL2 platform.

Its competitors by segment and price range are the Audi A3, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Lexus CT, the Leon Cupra and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. There have been 3 generations of the BMW 1 Series.

If a car model is specified in blue, it means its motor engine has a timing chain; that is, it has no timing belt. The rest of the vehicles marked in grey have a timing belt/cam belt.

BMW 1 Series I – First Generation (E81/E82/E87/E88) (2004)

Hatchback (E81, E87)

E81 (3-door) and E87 (5-door). The two upper pictures show the original bodywork, the other two bellow show the later redesign.

During this first generation, there is a clear distinction between the two available hatchback body styles of the BMW 1 Series. The 3-door hatchback is called the E81, and the 5-door is called the E87.
