FORD ORION: timing chain or timing belt information

About FORD ORION

The Ford Orion is a C-segment sedan from Ford. It was manufactured between 1983 and 1998 across 2 generations, with a total of 1.6 million units produced. It was the successor to the Ford Taunus and was positioned between the Ford Escort (C-segment hatchback) and the Ford Sierra (D-segment). In some markets, it was sold under alternative names such as Ford Verona (Brazil) or Volkswagen Apollo (Argentina).

The first generation of the Ford Orion (1983-1990) shared the HC front-wheel-drive platform with the Ford Escort. It was initially launched with high trim levels such as the Ghia. It offered 1.3 (69 hp) and 1.6 (79 hp) gasoline engines, as well as a 1.6 (54 hp) diesel engine starting in 1984. In 1986, the model received a facelift and incorporated new features such as ABS and new 1.4 (75 hp) and 1.6 (90 hp) engines. Later, a 1.8 (60 hp) diesel variant was added.

This first version of the Orion was praised for its spaciousness, comfort, and low fuel consumption. However, the suspension was stiff and had a short travel, which negatively affected the vehicle's stability and handling.

The second generation of the Ford Orion (1990-1998) rode on an entirely new platform. Ford put special effort into the rear suspension, using a torsion bar system instead of the previous independent one. Initially, it kept the previous engines, but in 1992 it renewed the lineup with modern Zetec gasoline and Endura diesel engines producing up to 115 hp.

In 1993, the Orion was renamed the Ford Escort sedan. This second generation improved in terms of safety and equipment, incorporating items such as ABS, front airbags, power steering, and climate control either as standard or optional. The structure was reinforced and redesigned to make it more modern.

The Orion's main rivals were the Opel Kadett, Volkswagen Jetta, Renault 11, and Fiat Regata, among others.
