TIMING CHAIN OR BELT? MODEL LIST - (UPDATED 2022)

| Home / Volkswagen / List of Volkswagen Polo Models without Timing Belt

The Volkswagen Polo is a supermini car (B-segment in Europe) manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen. It is sold around the world in different bodyworks; hatchback, sedan and family car.

There have been a total of 6 generations of the Polo, named by “Series” or “Mark” (Mk). The official nomenclature goes from Mk1 to Mk6, while many brand enthusiasts count as versions some of the most prominent facelifts, raising the counter up to Mk8 for the current version.

The first generation of the Polo dates back to 1975. It was a rebadged version of the Audi 50, also known as Volkswagen Derby. The second generation came out in 1981 in two body styles: family and coupe. The sedan version was sold as VW Derby. This second version did start from an exclusive development of Volkswagen, and rivaled vehicles such as the Fiat Uno or Peugeot 205. The model had a major redesign in 1990, receiving a much more modern and attractive bodywork.

The third generation Polo (1994) is known in some circles as the Mark 4. It was a model completely designed from scratch that shared a platform with the second generation Seat Ibiza.

The fourth generation (Mark IV) became comercially available in 2002. The model was built on the Volkswagen Group A04 (PQ24) platform. It underwent a facelift in 2005 and was marketed worldwide, including the United States. This model had several versions, including the Cross Polo, Polo Vivo, Polo GTI and Polo Sedan.

The fifth-generation Polo was awarded Car of the Year in Europe in 2009, and Car of the Year worldwide in 2010. It had two phases: the original, based on the Volkswagen Group PQ25 platform, and the facelift, Volkswagen Group PQ26. This new generation followed with the Volkswagen Cross Polo crossover and also had its sedan variant, sold as Volkswagen Polo Sedan in Russia or Volkswagen Vento in Mexico, South Africa and Argentina. There was also an Indian version with this body, called Volkswagen Ameo.

The sixth and current generation arrived in 2017. It is produced on the Volkswagen MQB A0 platform, shared with all small vehicles of the VAG Group. This model stopped having a 3-door version due to manufacturing costs. The model had an exterior redesign in 2021. It also has its sedan version, which is marketed in Latin America, called Volkswagen Virtus.

Volkswagen Polo. Timing Belt or Timing Chain?

Down below you will see a list with all the Volkswagen Polo models which have been produced so far. They are classified by model identifier, year and type of bodywork. Above each list, we show you a series of pictures so that you can have a visual reference for each model. In some cases, both the original and its updated design are displayed to help you identify them with ease.

In this guide you will find all the Volkswagen Polo models: Hatchback, Sedan / Sedan, Classic, Variant… as well as its sporty versions, better known as Volkswagen Polo GTI.

The Polo is a model that adapts very well to the markets in which it is established. That is why some of these models on this list, especially the Van and Sedan versions have only been sold in very specific countries in Asia and South America. Others have only seen the light of day in Europe or North America.

If a car model is specified in blue, it means its motor engine has a timing chain; that is, it has no timing belt. The rest of the vehicles marked in grey have a timing belt/cam belt.
