Volkswagen Atlas / Teramont — TIMING CHAIN OR BELT?

MODEL LIST - (UPDATED 2023)

| Home / Volkswagen / List of Volkswagen Atlas / Teramont Models without Timing Belt

The Volkswagen Atlas is an SUV car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured by the German marque Volkswagen. It began its production in 2017, and is a vehicle intended for the North American and Chinese market. This SUV is positioned above the Volkswagen Tiguan and below the Volkswagen Touareg. There is only one generation of the VW Atlas to date.

This model is marketed as Volkswagen Atlas in North America and Chile. In the Middle East, Mexico, China and Russia it is sold as Volkswagen Teramont. The American version is manufactured in Chattanooga, Tennessee, while the Asian model is assembled in Zingbo, Zhjiang, China, at the SAIC-Volkswagen facility.

There are some development differences between these two models, despite having the same starting point:

Volkswagen Atlas

The Atlas was unveiled at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, after a concept, the Volkswagen CrossBlue, was presented a few years earlier. In 2017, the German brand put the model on sale in the United States and Canada. The original name was to be Teramont, but U.S. dealers rejected the name.

In 2020, the model was redesigned for 2021. The Atlas now had a new front end based on another body variant: the Atlas Cross Sport. The Atlas is marketed with two gasoline engines: a 2-liter TSI and a 3.6-liter V6 atomospheric.

Volkswagen Teramont

As for the Chinese version, the Teramont was presented at the 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show. In this case, the SUV is available with 2-liter TSI engines and a 2.5-liter VR6, —significantly less powerful than its American equivalent—. In this case, Volkswagen did not use the same block, since engines over 3 liters are subject to a higher tax burden in China. In 2021, the model was redesigned and the Teramont X (known as Atlas Cross Sport in other countries) was added.
