Dodge RAM 1500 — TIMING CHAIN OR BELT?

MODEL LIST - (UPDATED 2023)

| Home / Dodge / List of Dodge RAM 1500 Models without Timing Belt

The RAM 1500 is a full-size pickup by the American marque Dodge, currently within the conglomerate Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC). This pickup was marketed as the Dodge Ram since 1980, but went on to be sold under the RAM brand name starting in 2010. The pickup has had a total of 5 generations. In addition to the RAM 1500, other more powerful variants such as the RAM 2500, RAM 3500 and RAM 4000 are included in what we know as “RAM Pickup“.

Dodge Ram trucks and vans were introduced in 1980. They were offered in different configurations with various bed lengths, engine choices and options. During this first generation, some variants were discontinued to make way for the Dodge Dakota, which was a success and even ended up taking sales away from this model. Despite its popularity with fleets, sales were poor compared to the Ford F-Series and GM C/K trucks due to their outdated design. Dodge made other mistakes, such as the lack of diesel options and the non-inclusion of big-block V8 engines until the end of this first phase.

The second generation Dodge Ram pickup began its development in 1986. It used a modular platform that would serve as a full-size truck and van. The newly redesigned pickup was introduced in 1993 and was a sales success, receiving Motor Trend’s “Van of the Year” award in 1994. Engine offerings included 3.9-liter V6, 5.2-liter V8, 5.9-liter V8 and 5.9-liter inline 6-cylinder Cummins turbodiesel, with the addition of a new 8.0-liter V10 engine. The truck was offered in 1500, 2500 and 3500 series with a variety of lengths and cab options.

The third generation Dodge Ram was introduced in 2001 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was a major update that included an all-new frame, suspension, powertrains, interiors and sheet metal. The double cab models were ‘Quad Cab’ trucks with conventional opening rear doors. The 1500 series had independent front suspension, while the 2500 and 3500 series retained the previous system for durability. These models were well received and sales increased, although they did not keep pace with the eleventh generation Ford F-150.

The fourth generation Dodge Ram was introduced in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The range included the Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 models. In 2010, the Ram Trucks brand was spun off from Dodge to focus more on passenger cars and performance vehicles. To keep the Ram competitive in the marketplace, the 2009 model received updates such as a new four-door cab style, suspension, a new engine option and the Rambox storage system.

The fifth generation of the Ram was introduced in 2018. The marque limited trim levels from 11 to 7 to reduce costs. Ram added an eTorque option to the 2019 Ram 1500, which combined a battery pack and belt-drive generator to provide additional torque and power regeneration. This torque boost could reach up to 176 Nm on the 5.7-liter Hemi. The new 2019 Ram 1500 model also saw increased capabilities. It had a maximum payload capacity of 1,000 kg and a maximum towing capacity of 5,780 kg when properly equipped. This was combined with a weight reduction of about 102 kg compared to the previous generation.

Some alternatives to the RAM Pickup include the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan and Honda Ridgeline.
