The Kia Sportage is an SUV (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by the South Korean marque Kia Motors. Its original version dates back to 1993 and was an off-road style vehicle designed on the Mazda Bongo platform. Since 2004 it became an SUV or Crossover along with its platform brother, the Hyundai Tucson.

The Sportage competes with other SUVs in its segment, such as the Peugeot 3008, Seat Ateca, Opel Grandland X, Renault Kadjar or Citroen C5 Aircross. There are 5 generations of this vehicle.

Kia Sportage I – First Generation (JA, NB-7) (1993)

The first generation Kia Sportage went on sale in 1993. The vehicle was built on the Mazda Bongo platform. This was due to an alliance of Kia with Mazda and Ford. This model had both diesel and gasoline engines. In addition, it was sold in two different body styles: SUV and SUV convertible.

Kia Sportage II – Second Generation (JE, KM) (2005)

The second generation of the Sportage began its production in 2004, after a two-year hiatus during which the vehicle was not marketed. It was a larger vehicle that had lost virtually all of its off-road qualities. In 2008, the model was redesigned with a new exterior. This Sportage was highly rated for its reliability.

Kia Sportage III – Third Generation (SL) (2010)

In 2010, the Korean brand bet on the third generation of the Kia Sportage. This SUV competed against options such as the Nissan Qashqai, and was a success. It had good reliability, was safe and also had a good range of engines both gasoline and diesel. In 2013, this SUV also received a small makeover.

Kia Sportage V – Fifth Generation (NQ5) (2021)

The fifth generation of the Sportage was introduced in mid-2021. Based on the brand’s latest N3 platform, Kia developed two versions of the Sportage with different body sizes and wheelbases depending on the market, which are known as SWB and LWB.

The European version has a wide range of powertrains, with the standard hybrid, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid Sportage.
