About HONDA PASSPORT
The Honda Passport is a D/E-segment SUV from the Japanese brand Honda. It has had 3 generations since its launch in 1993, succeeding the Honda C75 Passport. It is positioned between the CR-V and the Honda Pilot.
The first generation of the Passport was launched in 1995. It was a rebadged version of the Isuzu Rodeo, resulting from an agreement between both brands. It was offered with 4-cylinder gasoline engines of 120 hp or V6 engines of 190 hp, rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, and 4-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Its suspensions were robust, ideal for off-road use.
Esthetically, it had a square design and a clear utilitarian focus. In 1996, the engine range was refreshed, and a new all-wheel-drive system was introduced. In 1997, the 4-cylinder engine was discontinued due to low sales, leaving only the V6 option.
The second generation continued on the Rodeo base, featuring a more aerodynamic and modern esthetic. The lines were softened, and aerodynamics improved. It was exclusively offered with the 190 hp V6 engine and two trim levels. The chassis and suspensions were redesigned to achieve lower weight and greater comfort. The model stood out for its robustness and cargo capacity, although it experienced corrosion issues in some units years after production. In the year 2000, it received a minor esthetic and equipment update.
The third generation of the Honda Passport arrived in 2019, after being discontinued for 16 years. Conceptually, it changed, and it began to be sold as a 5-seater crossover based on the Honda Pilot. It is equipped with a 280 hp V6 engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Its design is athletic and robust, aimed at recreational use. The interior is versatile, with abundant space and technology. It is offered in sporty or luxury trims. Mechanically, it is a very balanced vehicle, with good ride comfort and performance. The all-wheel drive is very competent for light off-road use. The trunk is spacious and regularly shaped. In 2022, a more adventurous TrailSport version was introduced.
The main rivals of the Honda Passport throughout its history have been the Ford Explorer, the Toyota 4Runner, the Nissan Pathfinder, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
