About TOYOTA 4RUNNER
The Toyota 4Runner is an E-segment SUV from the Japanese brand Toyota. To date, 5 generations have been marketed since its launch in 1984. In Japan, this model is known as the Toyota Hilux Surf.
First generation of the 4Runner (1984-1989) was based on the Hilux pickup platform, featuring an adapted fiberglass body. It mounted 4-cylinder gasoline engines such as the 2.4-liter 22R with 96 hp or the fuel-injected 22R-E with 116 hp. There was also a 22R-TE turbo version with 135 hp. The transmission was a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. This generation laid the foundation for the 4Runner as a versatile all-terrain vehicle, but it lacked comfort and on-road handling.
The second generation (1989-1995) incorporated an integrated steel body and a complete redesign, gaining in aerodynamics and appearance. Although it still used the Hilux platform, there were suspension improvements for more comfortable handling. The engines were similar to the previous generation, but the offering was expanded with new powerplants like the 3.0-liter V6 3VZ-E with 183 hp.
The third generation arrived in 1995, and was sold until 2022. It marked a turning point, as Toyota developed a new platform, distinct from that of the Hilux. The exterior design was more aerodynamic and refined, in line with the trends of the time. New engines were introduced, such as the 2.7-liter 4-cylinder 3RZ-FE with 150 hp and the 3.4-liter V6 5VZ-FE with 183 hp. The transmission remained the same: 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.
The fourth generation (2002-2009) grew in size and adopted a more premium image. It became more luxurious on the inside, and higher-end versions featured 18-inch alloy wheels. The powerplants were a 4.0-liter V6 with 245 hp and a 4.7-liter V8 with 286 hp. It featured novelties such as traction control, X-REAS variable suspension, or dual-zone climate control.
The current generation, the fifth (2009-present), mounts a 4.0-liter V6 engine with 270 hp. The aesthetics are more aggressive, aiming for an off-road look, and the interior is better equipped. The TRD Pro version focuses on off-roading with special suspensions and differential locks.
The main competitor of the Toyota 4Runner is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a premium SUV with luxury finishes and advanced technology. Other alternatives are the Nissan Xterra or the Ford Explorer, versatile models of similar size.
