About TOYOTA AVANZA / VELOZ
The Toyota Avanza / Veloz is a B/C-segment MPV or multi-purpose vehicle from the Japanese manufacturer Daihatsu. This model is marketed as the Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia. The model was launched in 2003 and is now in its 3rd generation. It is mainly manufactured in Indonesia, although it is also sold in other Asian, Latin American, and African markets.
The Avanza succeeded the Toyota Kijang and has had two alternative names: the FAW Xenia sold in China and the Perodua Alza marketed in Malaysia.
The first generation of the Avanza was launched in 2003 and was built on a semi-monocoque platform with rear-wheel drive. It was available with 1.3 and 1.5-liter gasoline engines. Sales were solid, and the MPV received a restyling in 2006.
The second generation made its appearance in 2011 and was sold for 10 years. It retained the same platform but implemented improvements to reduce weight. The engines grew to 1.3 liters (95 hp) and 1.5 liters (103 hp). It received two restylings, in 2015 and 2019, which updated its design.
The third generation launched in 2021 shifted to the DNGA-B platform, thus switching to front-wheel drive. It features 1.3-liter (98 hp) and 1.5-liter (106 hp) engines.
The Avanza has been the best-selling car in Indonesia for most of its history. In its most successful years, it accounted for up to 17% of the country's total sales. By 2018, 2.75 million units had been manufactured. The Avanza's main rivals are other B-segment MPVs such as the Suzuki Ertiga, Mitsubishi Xpander, Honda BR-V, or the Nissan Livina. The Avanza stands out for offering a very competitive price-to-equipment ratio.
