About TOYOTA FORTUNER / SW4

The Toyota Fortuner is a D-segment mid-size SUV from the Japanese manufacturer Toyota. It is also known as the Toyota SW4 in some Latin American markets. To date, this vehicle has a total of 2 generations.

The first generation of the Toyota Fortuner was introduced in December 2004 at the Thailand International Motor Show. It was built on Toyota's IMV platform, shared with the Hilux and the Innova. It was positioned below the Toyota Land Cruiser and above the Toyota RAV4. It had four engine options: two gasoline engines (2.7 liters and 4.0 liters V6), and two turbocharged common rail diesel engines (2.5 liters and 3.0 liters). All variants were available with 4×2 or 4×4 drive, and 5-speed manual or 4- or 5-speed automatic gearboxes.

In 2008, a minor redesign was carried out, featuring new headlights and taillights, along with interior improvements. The second update in 2011 brought a completely new front end inspired by the Land Cruiser 200, featuring a redesigned hood, bumpers, headlights, and grille.

The second generation of the Fortuner debuted in July 2015. It shares its chassis, transmissions, and engine lineup with the Hilux, including the new 2.4 and 2.8-liter GD diesel engines with variable geometry turbochargers. The exterior design is more distinct from the Hilux, featuring a more refined image inspired by Land Cruisers. The interior also distances itself from other models to offer a more premium environment.

The gasoline engine lineup for this generation includes the well-known 2.7-liter and 4.0 V6, while the diesel options include the new 2.4 and 2.8 GD turbo engines, in addition to the 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter naturally aspirated options from the previous generation. The gearboxes are 5- and 6-speed manuals, and 5- and 6-speed automatics.

The Toyota Fortuner stands out from its alternatives for being a comfortable vehicle with many available engine options. However, it competes against models such as the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport / Montero Sport, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer.
