Hyundai Sonata — TIMING CHAIN OR BELT?

MODEL LIST - (UPDATED 2023)

| Home / Hyundai / List of Hyundai Sonata Models without Timing Belt

The Hyundai Sonata is a high-end mid-size car (D-segment in Europe) manufactured by the South Korean marque Hyundai Motor Company. It replaced the Hyundai Stellar in international markets. It has been manufactured since 1985, and has a total of 8 generations.

The first generation Sonata was just a luxury version of the Hyundai Stellar with a deluxe finishing. It was sold only in South Korea.

The second generation Sonata was marketed from 1988 on. The brand’s goal was to enter the North American market. It was designed by Hyundai, but shared a platform with the Mitsubishi Galant, also equipping the engines of the Japanese brand. The model arrived to the European market, trying to persuade Ford Granada Scorpio buyers with a more attractively priced alternative. A few years later, in 1993, the third generation was launched, with a major exterior redesign, but sharing virtually all the same mechanics.

The fourth generation Sonata debuted the Hyundai-Kia Y4 platform in 1998. It grew in size and substantially improved its suspension.

The fifth generation Sonata returned to a new platform, as well as a new range of more efficient engines. Shortly thereafter it was refreshed with more engines and better finishing.

Also known as Hyundai i45, the sixth-generation Hyundai Sonata was produced between 2009 and 2014. It primarily used large displacement inline 4-cylinder engines. In many markets, this model would eventually be replaced by the Hyundai i40.

The seventh-generation model was introduced in 2014. Internationally, the car regained the surname “Sonata“. Plug-in Hybrid versions were launched during this generation. In addition, the Korean brand made an interesting exterior redesign that was launched in 2017.

The eighth and current generation of the Hyundai Sonata began selling in 2019. It is a lower model, with much sportier styling and a smaller cabin than the previous generation. Its bodywork now tends to be similar to that of a fastback.

Some of the Hyundai Sonata alternatives are the Honda Accord, Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6 or Chevrolet Malibu among many others.

Down below you will see a list with all Hyundai Sonata models that have been produced. They are classified by model identifier, year and type of bodywork. Above each list, we show you a series of pictures so that you can have a visual reference for each model. In some cases, both the original and its updated design are displayed to help you identify them with ease.

In this guide you will find all Hyundai Sonata.

If a car model is specified in blue, it means its motor engine has a timing chain; that is, it has no timing belt. The rest of the vehicles marked in grey have a timing belt/cam belt.
