The Renault Safrane is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured by the French marque Renault. It was launched in 1992 as the successor to the Renault 25. There are 3 generations of this vehicle, although the model has been destined for different markets.
The first-generation Renault Safrane was the most expensive Renault to date. It was based on the Renault 25 itself, a sedan that had been a success in France. The Safrane’s design was intended to address the Renault 25‘s weaknesses in chassis rigidity and build quality, and to reduce noise to best-in-class levels. As a result, the Safrane was significantly heavier than its predecessor, as well as a more luxurious and better finished car. Despite this, sales were not as good as expected. This model underwent numerous redesigns (phases). Performance variants were also introduced, such as the Renault Safrane Biturbo. Production of this model ceased in 2000, giving way years later to the Renault Vel Satis.
In 2008, the French brand reused the name “Safrane” for some markets, such as Mexico. The Renault Safrane II was based on the second generation of the Samsung SM5, which in turn was based on the Nissan Teana. It was manufactured at the Busan factory (South Korea) and was only available with a V6 engine.
For those same markets, the third generation Renault Safrane would arrive in 2012, based on the Samsung SM5 III. In Europe and other markets, this vehicle was marketed as Renault Latitude.
