About Peugeot 406
The Peugeot 406 is a D-segment passenger car from the French manufacturer PSA (currently Stellantis). It was the successor to the Peugeot 405. It was manufactured between 1995 and 2004, when it was finally replaced by the Peugeot 407.
For the manufacturing of the Peugeot 406, the same PSA group platform as the Citroen Xantia was used. It was sold in sedan, station wagon, and coupé body styles. The sedan or saloon version of the 406 sold quite well, especially in its diesel engine option. It was very successful in the United Kingdom, where it was largely sold as a taxi. In 2002, a Peugeot 406 HDI broke the record for the longest distance traveled on a single tank of fuel.
The Peugeot 406 coupé was introduced in 1996 at the Paris Motor Show. Its design was handled by Pininfarina. There are all kinds of rumors surrounding this fact, as there is an urban legend that Pininfarina offered the design to Fiat (apparently for a Ferrari) and the Italians rejected the bodywork. However, there is no clear data to corroborate this rumor.
In early 1999, phase 2 of the Peugeot 406 was introduced. It improved in safety and performance, as they equipped a new family of engines, specifically the HDI family (EW and DW engines). As happened with the Peugeot 405, the production of the 406 continued in emerging economies. Although 406 production in Europe stopped in 2004 (2003 for the coupé version), its sale continued in Egypt until 2008.
